A Brief History of the College

The School of Language and Culture is a multilingual, interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, and open college originating from the foreign language teaching and research section and the Chinese teaching and research section established at the beginning of the school in 1984. Since 2006, the school has successively established the Department of Foreign Languages, the Department of Journalism and Communication and the Department of Chinese. In May 2019, the school merged some majors of the former School of Foreign Languages and the former School of Literature and Media to form the School of Language and Culture.

 

● Faculty

 

The college currently has 82 faculty members. In the professional teaching and research sections, 95% of teachers have doctoral degrees, 35% of teachers own senior professional titles; 15% of them are master's tutors; and there are 5 foreign teachers from the United Kingdom, the United States, and Russia. In the past three years, 4 courses, such as Advanced English, have been listed as key courses in Shanghai; 5 teachers have won awards in municipal teaching competitions; teachers have presided over 5 projects of the National Social Science Fund and more than 10 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, and published a dozen of papers in international authoritative SSCI and A&HCI journals, 50 more papers in CSSCI, and more than 30 monographs, translations and editors.

 

● Resource platform

 

Relying on the school's advantageous disciplines of law and the resource advantages of the national project China-SCO International Judicial Exchange and Cooperation Training Base, the college has founded 5 research centers, namely the legal translation and culture center, Dungan culture center, creative writing and cultural industry center, and foreign language teaching center and English and American literature center. The college has 8 language laboratories with advanced facilities, and has purchased online teaching assisting platforms and teaching resources such as English composition correction network, iTest online testing system, and U campus.

 

● Talent training

 

The college adheres to the motto of honesty, diligence, and integration between China and foreign knowledges, and is dedicated to serving the needs of national construction and economic and social development, and cultivating innovative and applied talents with solid professional foundation, perfect knowledge structure, cross-cultural communication ability and patriotism. The college currently has 5 undergraduate majors in Chinese (cultural and creative industry direction), Chinese language education, English, translation, and Russian, and a jointly-trained postgraduate program in journalism and communication with the School of Documentary Films, with more than 800 students in total.

 

Our professional training has the following characteristics:

 

1. Multilingual & interprofessional electives. Students can choose Japanese and Russian as a second foreign language, and can also minor in other majors such as law and management.

 

2. Study as exchanges in overseas colleges and universities. The college has established cooperative relations with well-known universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Russia and other countries, and implemented the 2+1+1, 3+1, and 3+2 cooperative training models, and students have the opportunity to go abroad for exchange and study.

 

3. Internship practice in international organizations. The China-Shanghai Cooperation Organization International Judicial Exchange and Cooperation Training Base established in our university provides students with a large number of internship opportunities, and students can serve as language service volunteers in large-scale events such as international conferences and CIIE.

 

4. Dual-certificate integration training mode. In addition to the undergraduate graduation certificate and degree certificate, the college supports students to obtain relevant professional qualification certificates at home and abroad, such as translation professional qualification certificate, foreign language teacher qualification certificate, etc.

 

The passing ratio of English and Russian majors in the national professional level-4 examination is 25% higher than the national average over the years. In 2019, the rate of Russian language majors reached 100%. the employment rate of graduates stays at 98% all the time, and the postgraduate entrance examination rate has reached 25%.  Many graduates have been admitted to prestigious foreign universities such as Columbia University in the United States, University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom, Moscow State University in Russia, and St. Petersburg University; students have achieved good results in various discipline competitions and innovation and entrepreneurship competitions at or above the municipal level.

 

In the future development, the college will continue to devote itself to strengthening the construction of Chinese language and literature as well as the foreign language and literature disciplines, relying on our school's advantageous disciplines of law and the national project  China-Shanghai Cooperation Organization International Judicial Exchange and Cooperation Training Base, promoting the coordinated development of various majors, and improving the overall level of discipline construction and the quality of talent training.
