On the afternoon of March 11, the 125th session of SHUPL Overseas Lectures titled Opportunities and Challenges for Translation and Language Students was successfully delivered by Mr. Marshall, Director of Australian Institute of International Studies, and hosted by Xia Ganlin, Vice Dean of the School of Languages and Cultures.
Drawing on his extensive experience in founding the Sydney Institute of Translation and the Australian Institute of International Studies, Mr. Marshall provided a systematic analysis of the development prospects for translation and language-related disciplines. He emphasized that translation is not merely a technical skill of language conversion but a vital bridge for transcending cultural differences. Taking the English word "possible" as an example, he illustrated how its nuanced translations in different contexts highlight the importance of precision in international communication. He stressed that the value of translation lies not only in conveying information but also in fostering knowledge dissemination and cultural exchange through language.
Mr. Marshall further noted that language learning is a process of deepening cognitive abilities, which shapes both career trajectories and societal development. Addressing the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the translation industry, he presented detailed data showcasing AI's breakthroughs in accuracy and efficiency while analyzing shifts in the global job market. He urged students to adopt an "intelligent + humanistic" dual-track mindset to navigate uncertainties: mastering digital tools while upholding humanistic values, and exploring innovative approaches to translation through human-machine collaboration.
