2. ABOUT THE SCHOOL

The School of Criminal Justice of Shanghai University of Political Science and Law was Initially established in 1989, and was renamed from former department of criminal justice to independent school with the approval of the Shanghai Judicial Bureau in April, 2011. Since its establishment, the School of Criminal Justice has adhered to the subject advantages, oriented to social requirements and meet the needs of market and enterprises, emphasize on training of capable technical legal personnel. So far, the School has created an innovative path of development with its own characteristics, and cultivated a large number of outstanding graduates for the society and have made remarkable contributions to the development of the construction of socialist rule of law with Chinese characteristics.

For the past few years, the School has made many outstanding achievements in teaching and scientific research. Faculty members have published more than 600 papers in various journals, among which more than 100 papers have been published in legal authority and other core journals. Moreover, the faculty has undertaken nearly 30 projects from the National Philosophy and Social Science Foundation, provincial and ministerial projects and other major projects, published more than 100 monographs, and won a number of national, provincial and ministerial awards as well as various other awards. The School of Criminal Justice has also signed a joint construction agreement for teaching and research practice bases with more than 20 political and legal units, and has sent a number of teachers to serve as deputy attorneys of various districts, visits abroad, and established cooperation with relevant universities in the United States, Britain, Australia, Hungary, India, etc. relation.

The School of Criminal Justice now has three teaching and research sections, there are Criminology (anti-terrorism), Criminal Law, and Training Center respectively. There are about 800 undergraduates and more than 200 postgraduates in Criminal Law. Among them, Criminal Law is the key discipline of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and the highland construction project for undergraduate education in Shanghai universities. In recent years, the School has invested a lot of funds in the construction of teaching staff, professional construction, teaching management and reform, etc., with the aim of promoting the construction of our college's characteristic disciplines and cultivating senior applied legal talents with profound criminal justice theory and skills. The School pays special attention to the training of students' practical skills, which has achieved remarkable results. It has won many awards in moot court competitions at home and abroad. In addition, the college actively implements the service function of colleges and universities to the society, relying on professional associations, actively carrying out voluntary services, and actively participating in the ideological and moral education of minors and the creation of community civilization.

 

3. FACULTY OVERALL SITUATION

The School has a powerful faculty resources and a number of experts and scholars with high popularity and influence in China. We have in total 21 full-time teachers and two thirds have senior professional titles. Among them, 4 are professors and 10 are associate professors. Professor Peng Wen-hua, the current dean was formerly the deputy dean and doctoral supervisor of the Law School of Soochow University. Professor Peng has been awarded the high-yield author of the key legal core journals of China Law Innovation Network several times. Besides, a number of teachers in the college have participated in the National and Local Studies of China Criminal Law Research Association, China Criminology Society, China Law Education Research Society, China Youth Crime Prevention Society, China Prison Association, Shanghai Criminal Law Research Society, Shanghai Anti-drug Law Research Society, etc. The academic group has held the positions of vice president, president, executive director, and director. Many teachers serve as legal consultants and consulting experts in local governments, political and legal committees, People's Courts, People's Procuratorates, Public Security Bureaus and other party and government departments.

In recent years, the School has made substantive progress in both teaching and research. In total, it has succeeded in obtaining nearly 20 grants from the National Social Science Fund and other research funding bodies at the provincial or ministry level. It witnesses the publication of books and monographs and over 600 journal articles, and the School has received many awards from the national or provincial agencies. Meanwhile, the School is under agreement with dozens of courts and procuratorates, and has sent teaching staff to serve as the deputy attorney-in-chief at the districts procuratorates. It has built international cooperation with many universities and colleges in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Hungary, and India.

6. SPECIALTY TEACHING PLAN

(1) Undergraduate Education Program

Law major program for undergraduate aims to train high quality compound application talents with solid legal theory foundation, the spirit of the rule of law, innovative thinking, global vision and practical ability. Through this program, students shall be armed with political theory, professional knowledge of law, knowledge of humanities and natural science foundation, good application of legal knowledge and skills to deal with various legal affairs, resolve various legal disputes as legal professionals or other professionals in specialized areas. This program aims to train high quality compound application talents with solid legal theory foundation, the spirit of the rule of law, innovative thinking, global vision and practical ability. Students shall be armed with political theory, professional knowledge of law, knowledge of humanities and natural science foundation, good application of legal knowledge and skills to deal with various legal affairs, resolve various legal disputes as legal professionals or other professionals in specialized areas.

This program focusing on training high quality compound application talents puts stress on the combination of theory and practice, requiring students to have a good structure of knowledge and capacity.

The graduates are required:

a. to acquire the basic theory and fundamentals of interdisciplinary subjects;

b. to acquire the basic research and analytical methodologies in the field of law;

c. to develop initial jurisprudence research and relevant disputation capacity;

d. to understand a certain degree of economics, political science, sociology and other subject knowledge, familiar with the use of knowledge and methods to understand, analyze and solve the problem;

e. to be familiar with international normal rules, practice and foreign laws as well as the country’s laws, regulations and its relevant provisions;

f. to be able to apply the knowledge to analyze and solve the problems;

g. to acquire a certain research and practical ability of doing research with the skills in data retrieval and documents searching;

 

(2) Top-up Program

This program, stressing both legal theory and legal practice, aims to arm the students with the theoretical foundations of law, professional expertise, as well as proficiency in a foreign language. The graduates will be of high quality, inter-disciplinary and application-type and be capable of working at governmental bodies, public body, enterprises and social association. The graduates are to have legal professional ethics, master the theoretical foundations of law, and based upon politics and law, serve nationwide as well as across Shanghai area. They are to develop the ability to deal with legal affairs, to think professionally, and to communicate fluently, both in writing and orally. Lastly, they must be proficient in English.

The graduates are required:

a. to acquire the theoretical foundations of law;

b. to acquire the basic research and analytical methodologies in the field of law;

c. to be familiar with international treaties, agreements, and practice, foreign laws, as well as China’s laws and regulations;

d. to be able to apply the knowledge to analyze and solve the legal problems in practice;

e. to be capable of understanding, speaking, reading and writing in English and dealing with basic legal affairs in English.
